Blue Carbon Ecosystems Project

Restoring Mauritius’ coastal ecosystems for a sustainable future.

Blue Carbon Ecosystems Project

The Importance of Blue Carbon Ecosystems

Mangroves and seagrasses are among the planet’s most powerful carbon sinks, playing a crucial role in mitigating climate change and protecting coastal resilience.

Mangroves act as natural shields, buffering coastal zones from storms and erosion, while creating habitats for fish, crabs, and other marine species vital to local communities.

Seagrass meadows filter land-derived waters, improve coral health, and serve as nurseries for countless marine species, ensuring a thriving biodiversity.

In partnership with ADD, Attitude Foundation, and Solidarité, the Odysseo Foundation is spearheading an ambitious restoration initiative aimed at preserving and enhancing Mauritius’ critical blue carbon ecosystems.

Through science-driven restoration, community involvement, and cutting-edge research, this initiative will restore, protect, and sustain these ecosystems for future generations.
